Optimism: 3 Reasons Why It's So Important

business growth Oct 12, 2018

If you are familiar with this blog then you know that we focus a lot on developing a growth mindset in order to reach your goals. One key component to developing a growth mindset is optimism. Not the happy-go-lucky kind of Disney World optimism that ignores all obstacles and challenges and skips along the rose path toward whatever lies ahead. Rather, the kind of optimism that see challenges and obstacles, but believes that they can and will be overcome, and then creates a path to success over, around or through them. There are three main reasons why optimism is important to a growth mindset:

Optimism Attracts Success

You have heard that you attract what is like you. So consider what you will attract if you exude pessimism. Pessimism says “I can’t” “It’s too difficult” “It’s impossible”. Pessimism attracts other pessimists, more challenges, and ultimately failure. Optimism, on the other hand, says “I can” “I will” “It IS possible”. Optimism attracts other optimists, solutions to problems, and ultimately success.

Optimism is Energizing

Have you ever had to sit through a meeting where problem after problem, obstacle after obstacle is addressed but never solved? It’s completely exhausting! You’ll leave feeling drained, stressed, and disheartened. On the flip side how much better do you feel when you leave a meeting where you started with a challenge and left with a solution and a game plan. It can feel almost exhilarating to come to a solution to a major problem with your team or your coworkers. As a business owner or leader, you are uniquely positioned to create this kind of optimism in your team’s problem-solving. As you begin to make changes, notice how much more is accomplished when your employees, team members, or co-workers are riding the wave of energy from YOUR positive mindset.

Optimism is Contagious

Have you ever noticed how one person complaining at the lunch table can start a whole string of complaining sessions that last through the afternoon. Complaining and general negativity is highly contagious and will spread through a company’s culture faster than the flu. But the good news is Optimism is contagious as well. While it isn’t usually as quick to catch on as negativity, once it takes hold and becomes a habit it can create an even more dramatic change in your company Imagine working with a group of people who not only believed you would meet your collective goals when things were going well but also believed you would meet them even in the face of adversity. This is the kind of culture you can cultivate when you practice optimism, instead of negativity.

When you trade pessimism and negativity for optimism it propels you toward your goals by attracting success to you, energizing you, and spreading to your team and coworkers. For those of us who aren’t naturally optimistic it can take practice to shift your thinking, but the payoff is well worth the work! You can think like average people and get average results or you can think like a champion and reap extraordinary rewards.  Which do you want?
